Courtland
Alabama, 2000.
The
city of Courtland, Alabama sent the majority of its male population to support
the Texians in the Texas revolution. Of
the company of men who left Courtland, one man returned. A handful of others survived the massacre in
Goliad, Texas, but did not return to Courtland. Courtland was one of the most prosperous cities in Alabama in
1835, but it never recovered from this loss.
In
2000, the Crossroads of Texas Living History Association, under the leadership
of Daniel Casbeer, traveled to Courtland to pay tribute to this town’s
sacrifice. With them, they took decrees
from the Governor, the State Senate, the House of Representatives and the city
of Goliad. The reception was
outstanding. There were tears in every
eye as the proclamations were read.
Crossroads
did a small reenactment of the Goliad battle for the people of Courtland. We thank Dan Casbeer for his tireless work
for many years to arrange for this experience.
Thanks Dan!
